signal

Scheme description / Schemenbeschreibung

Position of signal in the XML-Tree / Position von signal im XML-Baum

Multiplicity / Anzahl

[1..1]

Semantics / Bedeutung

A <signal> defines various "hardware parameters" of a signal resp. panel. A panel is a signal that cannot be switched.

Attributes of signal / Attribute von signal

  • id: XML-file-wide unique, machine-interpretable identity, required for later referencing that element internally. For a detailed explanation see Dev:identities.
  • code (introduced with version 2.1): Machine-interpretable string (e.g. an abbreviation) used for identification of the object across exchange partners, usecase specific uniqueness constraints may apply. Please see our description of the differences between id, code and human-readable identifiers.
Maschineninterpretierbare Zeichenkette (z.B.
  • name: Established, human-readable short string, giving the object a name. Not intended for machine interpretation, please see our notice on human interpretable data fields.
  • description: Human-readable, more detailed description as addition to the name. It should give additional explanations or hints to the contents of this element. Not intended for machine interpretation, please see our notice on human interpretable data fields.
  • xml:lang (introduced with version 2.1): This is a unique identifier of language. It uses basically the language standard IETF BCP 47 (external link) which may be different to ISO 639-1 (external link) or ISO 639-2 (external link). For mapping hints see relation to other standards (external link).
This defines the language used for name and description. Use <additionalName> to provide a name and/or description in other languages.

  • pos: This is the position on a track defined as distance from its start (trackBegin) regardless the "absolute mileage" in @absPos.
🗒️ For an explanation of the differences between @pos and @absPos see <mileageChange>
  • absPos: This is the position on a track as absolute mileage/chainage.
🗒️ For an explanation of the differences between @pos and @absPos see <mileageChange>
  • absPosOffset (deprecated with version 2.1): The semantics of this attribute aren't very clear. It seems to be redundant to the definitions with mileageChanges in "overlapping regions".
  • dir: This defines the validity of <signal> along the track. Possible values are:
  • none: <signal> has no direction restriction.
  • up: This denotes the direction from the <trackBegin> to the <trackEnd> (increasing relative position values).
  • down: This goes opposite to up (decreasing relative position values).
  • both: <signal> is valid in both directions.
  • unknown: <signal> is restricted to a certain direction, but this direction is not known.
  • ocpStationRef: This refers to the id attribute of the associated <ocp> element.
    (introduced with version 2.1)
  • controllerRef: This refers to the id attribute of the associated <controller> element.
    (introduced with version 2.1)
  • signalBoxOcpRef: This refers to the id attribute of the associated <ocp> element.
(deprecated with version 2.1), use controllerRef instead
  • stationOcpRef: This refers to the id attribute of the associated <ocp> element.
(deprecated with version 2.1), use ocpStationRef instead
  • type Possible values are:
  • main: A signal which commands stop to a trains or allows to pass with maximum or reduced speed.
Common Names: Norway: Hovedsignal (external link, 🇳🇴)
Further Information: Section in Wikipedia page (external link)

The following example describes the signals of the Boppard railway station on the Middle Rhine Railway (route number 2630 of the IM DB Netz).
Das nachfolgende Beispiel beschreibt die Signale des Bahnhofes Boppard an der Mittelrheinstrecke (VzG-Strecke 2630 des EIU DB Netz).

         </signals>
        </ocsElements>
      </track>

For this station, the entry distant/pre-signal (Va), the combined entry/home signal (A1) and the simple exit signal at track 2 (N2) are described. These signals show signal images in the old "H/V" version of the Deutsche Bundesbahn. Have a look to the Boppard track sketch of the responsible IM (DB Netz) to see a schematic signal plan of the station.

Speed signal

The following example describes a permanent speed restriction for all trains due to a tight curve in the Middle Rhine Railway (route number 2630 of the IM DB Netz).

The speed of the train (previously unknown) will be reduced to 110 km/h at km 106,663 and will be announced 991 metres in advance with the German ESO signal Lf 6. From kilometre 110.5, the speed can be increased again to 120 km/h, but only when the end of the train has passed this point.

The speed associated with the signal boards can be found in the following element:

Notes / Anmerkungen

General information on positioning

Positive pos values describe the distance from the track's begin. The track length is derived from the pos value in <trackEnd>.

The absolute mileage refered to by absPos is usually found on technical drawings of the track layout or on mileage posts next to the track.
