Semantics / Bedeutung

A <line> groups all tracks belonging to a line. The line typically has its own mileage and allows for the regular operation of trains.
Das <line>-Element gruppiert Gleise zu Strecken (external link, 🇩🇪, visited on 2018-12-15).

Attributes of <line> / Attribute von <line>

  • id: XML-file-wide unique, machine-interpretable identity, required for later referencing that element internally. For a detailed explanation see Dev:identities.
  • code (introduced with version 2.1): Machine-interpretable string (e.g. an abbreviation) used for identification of the object across exchange partners, usecase specific uniqueness constraints may apply. Please see our description of the differences between id, code and human-readable identifiers.
    Maschineninterpretierbare Zeichenkette (z.B.
  • name: Established, human-readable short string, giving the object a name. Not intended for machine interpretation, please see our notice on human interpretable data fields.
  • description: Human-readable, more detailed description as addition to the name. It should give additional explanations or hints to the contents of this element. Not intended for machine interpretation, please see our notice on human interpretable data fields.
  • xml:lang (introduced with version 2.1): This is a unique identifier of language. It uses basically the language standard IETF BCP 47 (external link) which may be different to ISO 639-1 (external link) or ISO 639-2 (external link). For mapping hints see relation to other standards (external link).
    This defines the language used for name and description. Use <additionalName> to provide a name and/or description in other languages.
  • type: This is a attribute indicating the importance of the <line>. The usage of this value follows usually local habits of the countries and might be defined by railway related laws or rules too. Unfortunately no biunique definitions are given for these terms in Europe and Worldwide.

Possible values are:

  • mainLine: A main line is an important section of a railway network, which connects cities or hubs and does serve high(er) speed passenger, larger cargo or suburban trains. Normally these lines are equipped with signals (external link), Train protection systems (external link) and allow higher speeds and axle loads (external link) (e.g. in Germany a maximum speed for passenger trains of 250 km/h and for cargo trains of 120 km/h is allowed by the law 40.html EBO § 40 (external link, 🇩🇪), see left side definitions). The German term for this type of lines is Hauptbahn, the Czech term is celostátní dráhy.
  • branchLine: A branch line is a railway line which branches off a more important through route, usually a main line. These lines have mainly local traffic only, lower speeds and lower equipment criterias (e.g. in Germany non supervised level crossings are allowed by the law EBO § 11 (external link, 🇩🇪), see right side definitions). The German term for this type of lines is Nebenbahn, the Czech term is regionální dráhy.
  • secondaryLine (deprecated with version 2.3): The usage of this value is not clear in the railML community, it is recommended to avoid this value.
  • other:anything: Any value that does not fit any value from the previous enumeration list, fulfilling the constraint: at minimum two characters, whitespace is not allowed. Please, apply Dev:usingAny accordingly.
  • infrastructureManagerRef: (introduced with version 2.2) This attribute provides the reference to an infrastructure manager entry given in <infrastructureManager>.
    Dieses Attribut dient der Referenzierung des Infrastruktur-Manager-Eintrags.
  • lineCategory: (introduced with version 2.3) This attribute specified the line category according to the definitions given in EN 15528.
    Possible values are:

Best practice & Examples / Empfohlene Anwendung & Beispiele

Austrian East Railway / Österreichische Ostbahn /

The following railML infrastructure example describes the Austrian East Railway (external link) from Vienna Main Station to the Hungarian border station of Hegyeshalom. The line is a main line and can be operated by all trains with a maximum axle load of 22.5 tons and a maximum meter load of 8,0 tons per meter. These constraints are summarized in the line category D4. The common used line number of the infrastructure manager ÖBB Infrastruktur (external link) is given with “11801”.

       <trackRef ref="tr01"/>
     </line>
   </trackGroups>

Please note, that the line element only provides a reference to the infrastructure manager. Do not try to put information about the infrastructure manager into any attribute of the line element. The detailed information about ÖBB Infrastruktur shall be given in the metadata of the railML file. This looks like this:

<railML ...>
  <metadata>
    <organizationalUnits>
      <infrastructureManager id="33e19910-794d-4afc-88f3-b5f27a3f6a6a"
                             code="ÖBB"
                             xml:lang="de-AT">
        <additionalName name="Austrian Federal Railways"
                        xml:lang="en"/>
      </infrastructureManager>
    </organizationalUnits>
  </metadata>
  ...
</railML>

For the attribute code in element <infrastructureManager> please use the matching value from the codelist file InfrastructureManagers.xml. In this example, the code ÖBB is given.

In some cases, the infrastructure manager may use additional own national values as reference to other systems. For the given example this may include

  • Pre-calculated tables for running times of different train types, engines and loads (Fahrzeitentafel),
  • Routebook of Speed Restrictions and Other Specifics (La-Heft) for engine drivers and
  • Mileage system for track maintenance works (Kilometrierungssystem).

As these references are specific for one use case or IT system these numbers and identifiers shall not be used as the central code for a line. These additional management numbers for the line can be named in a corresponding <any> element.

<any OeBB-Infra.Fahrzeitentafel.01="R179000ABC"
     OeBB-Infra.Fahrzeitentafel.02="R180000AB"
     OeBB-Infra.Fahrzeitentafel.03="R181000ABCD"
     OeBB-Infra.Fahrzeitentafel.04="S079000ABCD"
     OeBB-Infra.Fahrzeitentafel.05="S080000AB"
     OeBB-Infra.Fahrzeitentafel.06="S081000ABC"
     OeBB-Infra.LaStrecke="118"
     OeBB-Infra.Kilometrierungssystem="18" />
